  • Looking for racing crew? booze and sports entertainment? Check out a Chicago Griffins Rugby match

    Cross Promotion- Sailing/Rugby

    Chicago Griffins

If you haven’t already noticed there are quite a few rugby/sailor connections in Chicago sailing community these days. And to be quite honest, there could be a few more. It is my personal opinion, and that shared by others in the Chicago sailing scene, Ruggers make great crew.

Why? Well, we currently play a team sport where you rely on teamwork, timing, and communication, we don’t whine and winge about hardwork and bad weather, and we’re not afraid of putting back a few cocktails after a hard day of fun in the sun activities.

To further prove this point I would like to invite everyone in the sailing community to come out to a Chicago Griffins home match this Saturday, and two weeks from this Saturday, so you can see for yourselves the talent pool available for the Chicago sailing community. Those of you that have made it out in the past can attest to the fact that our home matches are a blast, and shouldn’t be missed (too often). We’ll be shuttling folks from our home bar, The Black Rock on Damen Ave just north of Addison, out to our home field in Cumberland Woods, over by O’Hare. This way you can minimize or eliminate your driving and enjoy an afternoon at the pitch with a drink in hand.

Last year we had several hundred people out at the match, and everyone had a great time even though the weather wasn’t too accommodating. We had gas heaters, hot toddies, and a couple kegs of Goose Island’s 312 Urban Wheat Beer on hand, who just happens to be one of the best sponsors!

If you’re not stuck in the boatyard on Saturday, or out on a 420, Vanguard 15, or on a Laser, come on over to the Black Rock (see link below for details) for a little brunch, then off to the pitch for an afternoon a drinks and entertainment. We’ll bring you back to the Black Rock and you can experience a post rugby party like none other in Chicago (rated PG-13 of course).

P.S. I’ll personally have two bottles of Gosling Black Seal rum, and I’ll be picking up some proper ginger beer for post match libations. Dark and Stormies anyone?

Sailing World announces 2007 Sperry Top-Sider Chicago NOOD Regatta – Competitor IRC Advisory:

Competitor IRC Advisory for the 2007 Sperry Top-Sider Chicago NOOD Regatta

    Chicago – 2007

    COMPETITOR ADVISORY

The Organizing Authority (Sailing World) has received inquiries regarding the possibility of handicapping a Section in the 2007 NOOD using the IRC Rule. Representatives from the OA and the Chicago Yacht Club have discussed this issue at length and have arrived at the following conclusions.

    1. The event will continue to register competitors as entries handicapped under PHRF and those entries will be divided into no more than 4 handicapped sections,
    2. Those participants who have valid, current IRC certificates will be encouraged to submit those documents to the OA, along with their PHRF entry, and they will be scored using both handicap systems. Prizes will be awarded to boats scored under the IRC Rule and there will be no increase in the entry fee for the event to affect this element of the regatta. The “official” results for the individual handicapped sections will still be determined using the PHRF Rule.
    3. We are mindful of the disparity of boats that might have IRC Certificates, and ask that competitors understand that it is impossible to equitably score boats sailing on different race areas. With that thought in mind, our intent is to limit IRC scoring to those entries that would “normally” be sailing together on the same circle.
    4. In order to move forward with this “dual scoring”, a minimum of 8 IRC rated entries must be recorded with the OA.

The Organizing Authority is mindful that things change and that various parts of our sport are constantly evolving. We want to move forward with this, but not at the expense of those loyal competitors who continue to race under local PHRF. We feel that this is the best solution for the event for 2007 with the full intent of addressing this handicapping issue again as things move forward into the 2008 season.

Your Google Calendar account will let you create and edit your own calendars online. You can keep them private for yourself, or publish them for other people to see. You can also let other people edit the calendars. Google Calendars are a good solution for organizing people and events.

You can add Google Calendar to your existing Google Mail account, or create a new account. Either way, it only takes a few seconds to sign up. It really is that quick and easy!

You can get your free account here:

With your Google Calendar account, you can also subscribe to sailfastchicago.com calendars. Race schedule information is then updated for you automatically.

Using Google Calendar– or other software supporting the iCal format, such as Apple iCal or Mozilla Sunbird– is a good solution for the tricky, time-consuming task of managing and communicating crew schedules.

Google Calendar provides an interesting feature- free text message alerts. Not guaranteed to wake up passed-out, hungover sailors on race days, though. However, automatic text alerts may be helpful if sent early the night before racing!
